Since we were out west at Susan's graduation, we decided to take a week off and explore Vancouver Island. We decided to skip Victoria and try to stay out in nature as much as possible, so we took the ferry to Nanaimo, then headed up through Qualicum Beach to Campbell River, then back down and across to Tofino.

On the road between Qualicum Beach and Tofino you will find MacMillan Provincial Park, which is home to a place called "Cathedral Grove". This grove contains some of the oldest and largest trees in the area. The largest tree in the grove is over 800 years old, 76 meters tall, and 9 meters around. The plaque beside it points out that the tree was already 300 years old when Columbus came to North America in 1492.

I couldn't capture the whole thing with my wide angle lens, but I came pretty close. You can see Angela at the bottom... dwarfed by the scale of these massive trees. It really was incredible.

We saw large Douglas-fir trees everywhere we went on the island. We also saw a lot of active logging, including heli-logging. It's a really big industry there, and it is plain to see why.

Technical details: This photo was taken with my Rebel XT + EF-S 10-22 at 10mm, ISO 400, f/8 for 1/160th of a second.

Now, that is awesome! Good idea to have Angela pose, so we can really get the
scale.	Amazing.
