Thursday night is "games night" with my friends. We used to gather in person each week to play board games, but during the pandemic we started meeting on Discord instead and playing games on Steam, and then later Board Game Arena (BGA), which I highly recommend by the way. These days we occasionally get together in person, but for most of us it is easier just to log in and play virtually.
On October 10th there was a big solar storm that caused incredible auroras around the globe. I had ventured out a few times to try to catch it, but I was pretty busy so I couldn't spend a lot of time outside looking. However, halfway through playing games, Craig signed on to the Discord server and said: "You have to go outside right now!" So, we paused the game and I ran out with my phone and snapped this photo. The aurora was almost too dim to see with the naked eye with all the ligh pollution - I could see that there was a red tint to the sky, and that was about it. However, modern phones are a marvel, and I was able to take this shot with the "Night Sight" mode. In this image: In the top right is the Triangulum constellation. In the upper middle of the image is the Perseus constellation. On the right side is the Pleiades star cluster. The bright star at the very bottom near the trees is Jupiter. Technical Details: This photo was taken with my Pixel 6 in "Night Sight" mode.
