Angela and I woke up to the distant sound of water running yesterday. With my ear to the wall, I started in the upstairs bathroom trying to figure out where the sound was coming from. Eventually the sound led me down to the basement where I found a pool of water and a very leaky pipe.

It seems that someone had removed a hot water tank sometime in the past, and capped the pipe with an iron cap. Over time, the iron rusted (as iron is known to do), until eventually it rusted all the way through and started dumping water all over the floor of the basement. We were very lucky that the leak was in the unfinished part of the basement, pretty much right over the drain in the floor, so there was no real water damage anywhere. Since we were already late to go help our friends move, we just shut off the water to the house, drained all the pipes, and left for the day.

Luckily, later that day I found myself at Home Depot with Sandy, and he helped me pick out a galvanized cap (that should hopefully be more resistant to rusting), and he gave me some teflon tape so that I could repair the pipe. So, after my concert today I got to play plumber for a few minutes and now I have a shiny new cap. Hopefully it will fare better than the last cap that was on there.
