For Christmas this year my Dad gave me money to buy a GPS receiver. (Thanks Dad!) I decided to purchase a Garmin eTrex Vista Cx receiver along with a copy of Garmin's Mapsource City Navigator North America version 8. I promise I will post some GPS related Pictures Of The Week soon, but at the moment the weather is too yucky to go out on GPS adventures.

Anyway, in order to use the maps on my GPS I had to buy additional storage, so I picked up a 1GB MicroSD card that was on sale at Future Shop. I am amazed at how small flash memory has become! MicroSD cards are tiny!

I decided to dedicate this week's photo to my amazement at the small size of a 1GB MicroSD card. Pictured here in the lower right corner is the MicroSD card I bought for my GPS unit. For scale, I have included some other items. The pencil is obvious. The blue and green 2GB SD card is from Angela's camera. The black and red 1GB CompactFlash card is from my camera. The 128 MB RAM stick on the left is just something I had lying around. The hard disk at the top is a 2GB 2.5 inch laptop hard disk that Alix gave me.

As you can see, all of these other things are HUGE compared to the tiny little MicroSD card, yet they all have similar amounts of storage. (Except for the RAM stick and the pencil, which both have virtually no storage.) Maybe I'm easily amazed... or maybe future electronic devices will be so small we won't be able to see them anymore.

Technical details: This was shot with my Rebel XT + kit lens on a tripod at 55mm, ISO 100, f/22 for 13 seconds.

Oh wow! That IS tiny! I would be afraid of losing it.

I suppose I must be
easily amazed too.

I am also amazed. And I too would be very nervous about losing something so
small (or a toddler swallowing it for fun). Somehow I find it comforting when
things are big and bulky... Maybe that's because I'm old! :)

Olympus and Fuji's xD cards are about the same physical size and about the same
cost / Gb these days. Both of them got a lot of flack for introducing yet
another flash memory card when they did (about 5 years ago). I guess there was
value in such a physically small flash card after all...

Oh and speaking of amazing flash memory, I heard yesterday that the cheap 32Gb
uber-fast flash memory cards may not be that far off at all...

Cool! I've been itching to buy an 8GB microdrive for some time lapse
photography, but I would rather get a big flash card instead... maybe I won't
have to wait much longer!
