There are two documentaries in theatres right now that everyone should try to see. An Inconvenient Truth, which is about Al Gore's travelling slideshow on climate change, and Who Killed The Electric Car?, which is about the short lived EV-1. I have a lot to say about these movies (and underlying issues), but I don't have time today, so I will spare you for now. However, I do plan on putting together a little web page about reducing carbon dioxide (and nitrogen oxide and sulphur dioxide) emissions sometime in the next week.
After watching An Inconvenient Truth, I did a fair amount of research on alternative energy sources, and found out that there is a new company in Ontario that provides "clean" electricity. They are called Bullfrog Power, and their business plan is simple. If you sign up with them (which you can do on the internet), they will act as your energy provider, and the electricity portion of your utility bill will be paid to them. They will take that money and use it to purchase electricity from clean providers such as wind generating stations and low impact hydroelectric plants. Since those power sources tend to cost more than coal, your electricity bill will go up slightly. Right now they charge 9.1 cents per kilowatt hour, and they have locked that price in for one year. So, if you use 100 kilowatt hours of electricity, they will make sure that 100 kilowatt hours get fed into the grid from clean generating stations.
In theory, this sounds like a great idea. I hope they can get it to work. As for the photo, starting this Friday my house will be "bullfrog powered", so theoretically I can rest easy knowing that none of my power is coming from coal fired power plants.

I guess the gas mower and flatulent ruminant options are out for cutting that grass, eh?-- Chad at 10:29am, Thursday October 26, 2006 EST
