Strange coincidences abound in this week's picture.
We finally had a couple of days of dryish weather this weekend, so I took the opportunity to rake my front lawn. When I was in Newfoundland, Alix gave me her old laptop to use for my photography, so before I started raking I spent some time setting it up so that it could control my camera. Once I had it working, I set up my camera rig in the garage, attached my wide angle lens, and programmed the laptop to take a photo every five seconds while I was raking the leaves. It took me just over an hour and a half to rake the lawn, and when I was done I took the 950 photos that my camera took and turned them into a thirty seocond time lapse video of the event.
Coincidentally, this weekend my friend and coworker Chad, who you may remember from this picture of the week, decided to use his video camera to film a time lapse video of his family setting up outdoor Christmas lights. He then posted it to his blog. (Chad's video can be found here).
When I saw Chad's video, I thought it was neat that we had both done time lapse videos of ourselves using leaf blowers at around the same time. I brought my video in to work to show him, and while he was watching it he realized that he had actually driven by my house while I was raking leaves. So, after a little bit of searching through almost 1000 photos, I was able to find this shot of Chad driving right by me as I rake leaves.
Coincidence?
Oh, and before anyone asks... I don't have the timelapse video posted anywhere. I don't have the bandwidth to host it.
Technical details: This was shot with my Rebel XT + EF-S 10-22 at 10mm, ISO 200, f/8 for 1/160th of a second.
You'll have to show me the time-lapse video next time I visit. That's a lot of lawn to rake! I'm glad to hear that the laptop is working for you.-- Alix at 12:51am, Friday November 10, 2006 EST
Aren't time lapse videos of people raking their yard what youtube and google video were inveted for?-- Russell at 5:22am, Saturday November 11, 2006 EST
Hahah... true! I've just been too lazy to sign up for an account. Maybe one of these days I will give it a shot.-- Michael at 12:20pm, Saturday November 11, 2006 EST
OK, I'm now officially on YouTube. My leaf raking video can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-m2hCZ42yo-- Michael at 10:30pm, Tuesday November 14, 2006 EST
Woot! That's excellent, Mike! Let's stage some more coincidences! Er...I mean, let's let fate take it's course and keep our camera's rolling! I'm up for the tank-cam that launches the rocket-cam at the groundhog.-- Chad at 8:52am, Wednesday November 15, 2006 EST
Can't believe I typed camera's with an apostrophe. IQ -= 1;-- Chad at 8:53am, Wednesday November 15, 2006 EST
You also put an apostrophe in "it's", when you clearly meant to use the possessive form... but I don't think anyone will notice. ;) The tank-cam launching the rocket-cam is the best idea I've heard all year!-- Michael at 10:18am, Wednesday November 15, 2006 EST
