Sorry for taking so long to put up this week's picture. As you probably know, last week we had a natural gas leak. When the inspector came around to investigate, he found numerous other issues that I needed to deal with. As a result, I stepped up my plans to get a new furnace.

On Tuesday, I acquired a new high efficiency furnace and started installing it (with some help of course). However, installing a direct vent furnace had two side effects: First, since the furnace had its own vent, the only thing left using the chimney was my gas water heater. Second, the vent for my water heater was in the way of where I wanted to put the new vent for my furnace.

Given these two facts, it seemed logical to upgrade my water heater to a direct vent model, and move it across the room into an unused corner. On Wednesday, I acquired a new direct vent water heater, installed it, and finished installing the furnace.

Today (Thursday), I mixed up some concrete and patched all of the new holes I put in the house, and blocked up the now disused chimney. I also finally got around to snapping a picture.

This is just a random photo I took to represent the more than 20 hours I spent in and around my basement in the past three days. The two pipes in the centre are the new water pipes we ran to and from the new water heater in its new location.

As exhausting as this work was, I'm glad it is done. I now feel much better about the mechanical workings of that part of my house. Plus, I have wanted to replace the furnace ever since I bought the house, so it feels good to know that it is finally done.

Technical details: This was taken with my Rebel XT + 50mm 1.8 Mark II, ISO 200, f/1.8 for 1/50th of a second.
