Angela gave me a camping trip for my birthday this year, so this weekend we headed to Pinery Provincial Park to spend two nights away from the house. During our brief stay, we hiked through the native Carolinian forest, paddled down the Ausable River, climbed large ancient sand dunes, learned how to identify white and black oak trees from a large distance, and we saw all sorts of different animals.

I took over a hundred pictures during the course of the weekend, so it was hard to choose just one for my Picture Of The Week, but I eventually settled on this picture of a "Painted Turtle". We saw many turtles sunning themselves on driftwood while we were out in our rented canoe. Luckily I was brave enough to take my camera and telephoto lens into the canoe with me. :)

This was taken with my Rebel XT + EF 70-300 IS at 300mm, ISO 200, f/5.6 for 1/500th of a second. In retrospect I probably should have used a smaller aperture, especially since my canoeing shots were all in direct sunlight. Luckily this shot turned out well. I pretty much left it "as shot" except for a quick run through Noise Ninja, a little bit of cropping to center the turtle, and some resizing and sharpening for the web.

Nice capture! Don't sweat the smaller aperture thing, the maximum aperture
size on the 70-300 @ 300mm is f/5.6...	I want to see the other pictures you
took! You should consider signing up for Picassa web albums:

Thanks! I didn't know Picasa was going online, though it makes sense.	I've
signed up for the trial, so hopefully they will get back to me soon.
