This picture was actually taken a week ago at StarFest, which is the largest Astronomy party in Canada. Aravind and I were headed out to take some pictures with his telescope, and we heard it was happening nearby. So we dropped in and decided to hang out there for the evening. For this picture, I attached my camera to the "piggy back" mount on Aravind's telescope, pointed it at a random section of the milky way, and exposed the film for about 10 minutes or so. I was a little disappointed when I got the pictures back from the developer, because they all came out a uniform grey colour. I specifically told them that they were night shots, but they still screwed it up. That's just one of the pitfalls of film photography. I took the opportunity to test out the negative attachment on my new flatbed scanner. What you see here is the result of my experiment. I think the picture turned out really well. The scanner had some problems due to the low contrast of the image, but otherwise it did an admirable job. I've taken the negative back to get reprinted, so I will find out how they did on their second try this week. Oh yes: The bright star near the centre of the image is Altair, and the black thing at the bottom of the picture is the dew shield on Aravind's telescope.
